Ida Leeson was born in Sydney in 1885 and lived in the working-class suburb of Leiehhardt. Her entry as a history honours student in the Faculty of Arts at Sydney University in 1903, like her earlier access to Sydney Girls' High School, was won by scholarships. She graduated in March 1906 and in August joined the staff of the Public (now State) Library of New South Wales as a junior attendant. She left as Mitchell Librarian 36 years later.

Ida Leeson's knowledge of Australian resources and her contribution to Australian scholarship have gained some recognition, but not nearly enough notice has been taken of the fierce intelligence and fearless zeal with which she hunted, gathered and helped to…
