Marian Elizabeth Bate, BSc MSc Syd., DipLib UNSW, AALIA 1946-2006.(Obituary)
Marian Bate's considerable achievements in librarianship spanned a relatively short library career of 28 years, from 1973 to 2001. Marian passed away in June 2006, nearly five years after her retirement from the position of University Librarian at the University of New South Wales.
After an idyllic childhood with her siblings amongst villages of the south coast of New South Wales, an academic career appeared a distinct possibility for Marian. At the University of Sydney she completed a Master of Science by Research in pharmacology and was employed as a teaching fellow there. Marian's research was on the effects of beta-blockers on congestive heart failure. She ran laboratory classes for undergraduate students and also made a decisive impression on her contemporaries at…
