HARWICH Haven Authority has bought a new survey launch this year and is considering the replacement or life extension options for its pilot launches.
The Egret will enter service in April, replacing the Avocet after 27 years' service. Built by VT Halmatic, the 52-ft Egret has multibeam survey capability and is designed to assist with research and monitoring work, says HHA chief executive Stephen Bracewell.
'A new feature is that it will be equipped with a moon pool for loading survey and other equipment through the hull instead of over the side,' he says.
The first of HHA's 'Haven class' pilot launches, which are dedicated to boarding and landing at the Sunk, was delivered in 1999. 'In principle, we are looking at a 10-year cycle of newbuild or life extension, and we need to decide which road we want to go down,' says Mr Bracewell.
