ITALIAN cruise ferry pioneer Aldo Grimaldi is optimistic that the first of eight new vessels baptised in Genoa last week will provide a much-needed boost for Grandi Navi Veloci, the company he founded and is president.
Mr Grimaldi ordered the Coraggio(above) 18 months ago through his own Grimaldi Holding, part of a contract for four vessels with options for four more from struggling Tuscan shipyard Nuovi Cantieri Apuania.
Until a few weeks ago, the remaining four vessels were still under negotiation, but a company spokeswoman said they had now been confirmed, taking the value of the order to €450m ($599m).
In their initial configuration, the new ships are 200 m long and 27 m wide, with 67 cabins, seven decks, and a cruising speed of 25 knots. They have capacity for 3,000 line metres of cargo or 1,000 cars, and up to 600 passengers.
Recent modifications to the orders will add to that capacity after the third ship is completed.
