(From Lloyds List)
Teekay Shipping Australia has warned that it is only a matter of time before resources developments in Australia slow down or maybe do not even get off the drawing board because of the shortage of marine skills, writes Lloyd's List DCN .
Teekay has undertaken a programme to install equipment to meet robust new environmental standards, its chief executive, David Parmeter, said at the Spillcon conference dinner in Perth.
The company also has instituted a review of onboard systems and procedures and has launched new training programmes for shore and sea staff.
In many ways installing new equipment and upgrading systems was the easy part of the process, Mr Parmeter said.
If the equipment was to do its job and the systems were to be followed, companies needed to have the right people, he said.
'In roles that require marine qualifications well trained, committed, professional sea staff is required,' Mr Parmeter continued.
