GERMANY'S state-controlled social security system for seafarers has been opened up following political pressure.
From January 2009, crew on German-flagged vessels will be allowed to select their health insurer rather than be obliged to turn to the former monopoly Seekrankenkasse.
The move is part of the break-up of the so-called See-BG, which traditionally combined statutory accident insurance, pension scheme and health insurance.
