'ANOTHER day, another dollar' has morphed into 'another dollar, another deadweight tonne' in the Atlantic loading zones that feed the handybulk trades, writes Rajesh Joshi in New York.
Round voyage rates in the Atlantic basin are close to cracking the $40,000 a day barrier, but last week was flat in that regard. The rate remained pegged at $39,250 a day, but brokers expect the trend to remain firm.
Elsewhere, too, the handybulk market remained flat last week to wit, bountifully healthy.
Round voyages in the Pacific were commanding $34,500 a day, an increase of $1,000 on the previous week.
Business in South America and along the US Gulf has come into its own thanks to strong sugar and grain cargoes. Brokers are anticipating firm rates across the board for the near future, as the 'season' plays out.
