THE former president of a US maritime trade union and his brother, also a former union official, have been sentenced to jail for misusing the union's pension funds.
US District Judge James Cohn in Fort Lauderdale sentenced Michael McKay, former president of American Maritime Officers, to six and a half years.
His brother Robert, the former secretary-treasurer, got a 15-month sentence.
They will begin serving their sentences on April 30. Both men are barred from holding union posts for 13 years after their release.
Michael McKay was told to forfeit more than $2m in criminal proceeds to the US government and to pay the union $275,000. Robert McKay must turn over about $510,000 to the government and $260,000 to the union.
