Scrap plan imminent
THE European Commission will publish its green paper on shipbreaking 'in the month to come', writes Justin Stares in Brussels.
Colleagues last week backed a plan by Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas to put forward the paper, essentially a discussion document, by the end of April, said Mr Dimas' spokeswoman. 'The commission was supportive of the proposal for a green paper on shipbreaking,' she said.
The paper, which is expected to be followed by concrete legislation, will look at issues such as the revival of the European shipbreaking industry and methods for reducing the environmental and health damage caused by the industry in local communities in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The commission last week held an 'orientation debate' on the issue.
