Top official defends mining law Political Correspondent CAPE TOWN The large number of new mining and prospecting licence applications was evidence of strong investor interest in the South African mining sector and showed there was no basis for claims that new mining legislation had acted as a disincentive to investment, a government official said this week.

The mining industry has suggested that the introduction of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act contributed to the decline of mining investment amounting to about R10bn.
