A year after making its cargo division an independent subsidiary, Lufthansa German Airlines says the move has allowed the cargo unit to offer several new airfreight services.

And although some freight forwarders say some of the new services come close to impinging on their business, several forwarders say the change hasn't hurt service.

The spinoff -- under which Lufthansa's $2 billion-a-year cargo operations became a separate legal entity, Lufthansa Cargo GMBH -- was pan of a company plan to cut labor costs and improve efficiency.
