During a visit to Moscow on February 26, Hamas political chief Khaled Meshal praised Russia's efforts to help Hamas win support for a new "unity government" for Palestine with rival PLO-Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas. Russia is the only member of the Middle East Quartet (the other members being the United Nations, the United States, and the European Union) that has maintained ties with Hamas since the Islamist group took over the Palestinian government last year.
"We value Russia's position towards lifting the blockade from which the Palestinian people suffer," Meshal said in a statement issued in Moscow. "We also value Russia's special position in the issues of the Middle East settlement."
