Blackwell deal furore mounts

The acquisition of scientific publisher Blackwell by US rival John Wiley has met with widespread condemnation from libraries and universities across Europe and the US, concerned that the sale will lead to big price hikes.

According to Wiley, the [pounds sterling]572m deal has been approved by US and German regulators and is expected to complete in early February. But the acquisition has prompted fears of price rises and increased use of bundling, putting pressure on library budgets, reducing choice and squeezing out smaller publishers and new titles.

A letter sent to the EC and signed by organisations representing hundreds of institutions -- including the Society of College, National and University Libraries, whose members include every university library in the UK and Ireland -- expressed "deep concern" over the transaction and urged an investigation.
