Lazarus brings out of print back to life

Tracey Caldwell

Cambridge University Press profited to the tune of [pounds sterling]500,000 in 2006 from its Lazarus programme for putting out-of-print books back in circulation. Sales are driven largely by online second-hand book markets such as Amazon.

Lazarus uses digital printing technology to make available again books that have gone out of print to make way for new titles.

"The out-of-print revival has been proven in terms of concept," said Rufus Neal, manager of digital business co-ordination at CUP. "Every year we have 1,500 books go out of print and publish 1,500 new books."

Of CUP's 24,000 paperback and hardback titles, 70% sell fewer than 50 copies a year, and 40% sell fewer than 10 a year.
