Leeds slashes salaries of specialist subject librarians

Laura Smith

Three long-serving librarians at the University of Leeds are to see their salaries cut as part of a university-wide overhaul of pay and grading structures that is likely to see each of them lose thousands of pounds a year.

The subject librarians have filed an appeal against the decision.

Gavin Reid, president of the Universities and Colleges Union (UCU) at Leeds, told IWR that 96 members of staff had been "red-circled" last May. The figure was reduced to 20 after conciliation service ACAS got involved.

If the cuts go ahead, those affected, who include administrators, teaching support staff and IT workers, will lose up to [pounds sterling]8,000 after four years.
