The American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) has thrown its weight behind the campaign for open access to publicly funded scientific literature, arguing that allowing the public free access to research should not dent the profitability of scientific journals.

The ASCB said that taxpayers, who fund the vast majority of biomedical research carried out at US universities, were "not fully benefiting from the work they fund.
