One of Europe's oldest libraries, the Bodleian at Oxford University, is to be headed by a woman for the first time in its 400-year history.
American Sarah Thomas, whose distinguished career includes heading the public service collections at the Library of Congress in Washington DC and overseeing Cornell University's 20 libraries, is the first foreigner to take up the post.
Thomas takes over as Bodleian librarian and director of university library services from Reg Carr, who retired last month. During his tenure, Carr signed an innovative deal with Google to digitise more than a million of the library's older books and make them available on the internet.
