Mar. 19--The Detroit Press Club Foundation's 2007 Michigan Excellence in Journalism Competition has recognized five Free Press journalists.

Jeff Gerritt won first place in "Newspaper Editorial or Commentary" for a series of columns that exposed woeful health care for Michigan prisoners. The series revealed how inmates often died from neglect.
