Mar. 18--Is your children's homework supposed to be your homework?
It's a tougher question than No. 4 on last night's algebra assignment. The schools say parents are supposed to be involved, but does that mean checking every answer and correcting spelling mistakes? How much homework help should you give? The parent panel's assignment this week was to answer that very question. Jennifer Carter: Young children should be held accountable for doing a "first draft" of their homework. Then, parents can review it and help fix mistakes. It's time-consuming, but it's the parent's job to teach good habits, and to reinforce what kids learn in school. There should be some basic ground rules. For example, homework comes first, before television or playing. You should also teach kids to not be satisfied with work that is sloppy or has errors. Parents who are stressed or rushed sometimes do their children's homework for them, because it seems easier. But if you always do that, they're not developing good work habits. If your children make mistakes, you need to determine if it's because they are not checking their work, or if it's because they truly don't understand something.
