The bad news: That 1939 Auto Union Type D V12 that was pulled from the Feb. 17 Retromobile auction in Paris is not the car that won the 1939 French Grand Prix.
The good news: The car, which wowed the crowds at Retromobile despite its then-dubious status, is believed to be the last remaining 1939 Auto Union Type D V12 in existence that can boast Grand Prix racing provenance.
Here's the lowdown, based on a three-week probe by Christie's auction house and Audi Tradition, the German automaker's house of historical record: Christie's had accepted the car for sale as Auto Union Type D Chassis No. 21, which was stamped on the frame. In fact, the car is really Chassis No. 19, and No. 21 is believed lost forever.
