Mar. 11--At Village Oaks Elementary School last week, Principal Michele Tatum had to tell her roughly 430 students that their school probably won't be open next year. Lincoln Unified has seen fewer students file into its classrooms over the past several years. In a state where public schools are funded based on how many students attend, fewer students mean fewer dollars. Administrators say the district needs to close Village Oaks to offset the thousands of dollars it is losing to falling student numbers.
