Mar. 8--After a marathon politically charged discussion, a unified Milpitas city council late Tuesday night shot down a fellow council member's plans to convert a duplex into her real estate office.
Councilwoman Debbie Giordano's rezoning request sparked an opponents' petition drive and conflict-of-interest accusations from residents who claimed she was using her position to benefit herself.
At 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, the council voted 4-0 to reject the proposed rezoning of a quarter mile of residential duplexes on South Victoria Park Drive -- including Giordano's -- into an area that could include small businesses and shops.
