Mar. 8--EAST GREENBUSH -- When high school student Helena Echandy came out as a lesbian, she mostly spent time with her closest friends, cautious about dealing with the public at large. Now the 19-year-old senior at Columbia High School is a gay-rights activist and a member of her school's new Gay-Straight Alliance.
