One type of space memorabilia that has solid investment potential as well as aesthetic and historical value, experts say, are the maps and charts astronauts took with them on missions into space and onto the moon. For each space mission, defense-mapping agencies prepared special charts for NASA.
"They printed hundreds of these because it was just as cheap to do a bunch as a few," says Gregg Linebaugh, a consultant for Swann Galleries in New York (he also runs the site www.TheSpaceSource.com). "But not that many are still around in good condition."
The ones that have survived, Linebaugh says, "are period pieces and historical artifacts. For investors, it can't get much better than that."
