Byline: CURT CAVIN
NASCAR stumbled out of its Daytona 500 delirium at California Speedway, bringing the subject of Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s unsettled future back into focus.
The Nextel Cup paddock is still awash in red-car rumors and nothing more. But speculation swings so far from left to right that it's difficult to know where the middle is.
Some suggest that the sport's most popular driver eventually will stay with the team his father created in 1997; others figure a move to another employer remains possible. At this point, the former seems more likely, but there clearly are suitors hoping to benefit in the event of the latter.
Earnhardt has been mostly quiet on the subject since revealing in Daytona that he seeks control of Dale Earnhardt Inc., although he told the Fox Sports website prior to Sunday's Auto Club 500 in Fontana that he "absolutely'' plans to stay at DEI.
"We're working toward a solution,'' Earnhardt said of his negotiations with DEI, which is owned by his stepmother, Teresa Earnhardt, with whom he has a frosty relationship. "It's where I've been for so long. It's where I'd love to be.''
Junior declined AutoWeek's request to elaborate on the comment.
