Mar. 7--Routinely screening people at high risk of lung cancer with low-dose CT scans does not reduce the risk of death and may even cause harm, say researchers whose conclusions fly in the face of other findings reported just six months ago. Questions have arisen over the validity of spiral CT scans, which some lung cancer experts say can be used as a tool to detect even the tiniest of lung tumors, allowing surgeons to remove them before they kill. Spiral CT scans are an investigational technique involving a computer linked to an X-ray machine. As many as 600 images from numerous angles can be taken in a single scan.
