French President Jacques Chirac has sent an unequivocal message to EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson by warning him against the temptation to make any new concessions on the agricultural aspect of the Doha Round trade negotiations at the World Trade Organisation. During a visit to an agricultural exhibition on 3 March in Paris, the French president became the defender of the profession's interests by directly attacking the commissioner. "We must be firm as a rock" vis-a-vis Mandelson's temptations to give in to the WTO, declared Jacques Chirac. He suspects the European Commission of wanting to "yield to the WTO while neither the Americans for agriculture, nor the developing countries for services and industry want to make the least concession".
