The EU should use its current economic upturn to increase the pace and ambition of structural reform, according to a joint statement from the main European business organisations.

The statement, released in advance of the Spring Summit of EU leaders on 8-9 March, warns that certain member states are not seizing this opportunity, notably concerning budgetary consolidation. Other areas specifically identified where greater efforts are needed include reducing fiscal and regulatory burdens on business, and also addressing labour market over-regulation.

On better regulation,' the organisations stress that efforts to simplify existing laws should have as broad a scope as possible, taking in national regulations as well as Community law, and also including rules established through the comitology process.
