Talks between the EU and the US to come up with a new agreement on transfer of air passengers' personal data to the US authorities were launched in Washington DC last week. The key issues are how much data has to be sent, which US agencies have access to them and how long they can be stored, Jonathan Faull, the European Commission's Director-General for DG Freedom, Security and Justice said on 2 March. Faull said he wanted to reduce the amount of data sent to the US.
Under the October 2006 Passenger Name Record (PNR) agreement, which expires this July, the US has access to 34 data items in airlines' reservations databases, including passengers' addresses, e-mail addresses and credit card details. Faull said that in practice not all this data is sent because airlines do not always collect it.
