According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the Annual Meeting of the International Society for Interferon and Cytokine Research, held October 2-7, 1994, in Budapest, Hungary, "The mechanism of action of different types of interferons (IFN-a, -b and -gamma) against HIV-1 infection was investigated in chronically infected monocytoid U937 cells, and during an acute infection of the T-lymphoblastoid CEM cells. Two chronically infected U937 cell populations, obtained independently (referred to as type A and B cells), were analyzed for their response to IFNs. In type A cells, IFNs mainly inhibited virus particle release whereas in type B cells, the anti-HIV effect of IFNs …
