Mar. 4--Tiffany Atkins was living on her own and needed to support herself, so she dropped out of West Lincoln High School about two years ago to work a full-time telemarketing job. Atkins later realized her opportunities would be limited without a diploma, so she enrolled in the Adult High School program at Gaston College. "I just knew I wasn't able to do anything with my life without continuing my education," said Atkins, now 17. School officials have long worried about the large number of teen dropouts. The cohort graduation rate, a figure released last week by the state, offers a new look at how many students make it to graduation. The rate looks at the group of students who entered ninth grade in 2002 and calculates how many graduated four years later. Gaston County's rate was 68.1 percent; Lincoln's was 69.4 percent.
