PUTRAJAYA: There was a hidden hand in many of the 19,291 cases of foreign maids who ran away from employers last year: employment agencies. The Immigration Department has proof that some agencies had helped the maids abscond.

Department enforcement chief Datuk Ishak Mohamed said some agents "offered" the maids to new employers to make additional profits.

"They stood to make RM5,000 from each case of offering such maids to new employers instead of the RM40 paid by former employers to renew their maids' permits." Ishak added that the agencies then changed the particulars in …
