GRITZINGER: Nissan has upped its midsize game with this all-new Altima-a more stylish wrapper, vastly upgraded interior (at least in this leather-equipped model), topped off with a hybrid (albeit borrowed from Toyota) power-train. I'd take a little more steering response and a tad more body control (is the extra hybrid battery and powertrain weight taking a toll here?), but otherwise the car is right there with other midsize winners like the Toyota Camry and the Saturn Aura. This one has so much stuff on it that the sticker is scary high, but the car will do just about everything except drive itself-and get close to 40 mpg doing it.
