Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable badges are back, replacing Ford Five Hundred, Ford Freestyle and Mercury Montego nameplates in the automaker's 2008 lineup. But the new names are hardly the most compelling updates to Ford's big cars.
The biggest change comes under the hood, where the new models get the 3.5-liter V6, replacing the anemic 3.0-liter Ford had assigned to the task of pushing the nearly two-ton sedan. With 260 hp and 245 lb-ft of torque, the 3.5-liter is up 57 hp and 38 lb-ft over the old engine. The powertrain retains the six-speed automatic transmission.
