Feb. 22--A broad cross section of physicians, public health officials and advocates all concur that fighting a virus known to cause cervical cancer is a critical goal. But the debate over whether the state should require young girls to receive a new vaccine sparked questions Wednesday over its safety -- and whether the state should be in the business of requiring a vaccine for a sexually transmitted disease.

Public health officials, pediatricians and women's advocates urged legislators at a public health committee hearing not to rush into making the recently approved HPV, or human papillomavirus, vaccine a requirement for girls entering sixth grade.
