General Muhammadu Buhari's presidential campaign finally kicked off on Thursday at Aba, Abia State, but not without some drama. The high point of this delayed campaign take off was the collapse of the platform with General Buhari and others standing on it, as he was addressing the crowd .
While General Buhari may not be superstitious, he would however be hoping that the collapse of the platform would mark the end of the long running travails of his party, which since losing the general election in 1999 to the PDP on the alliance ticket of AD and then APP, has continued to constrict in size. From nine states it originally controlled, the party has since then shrunken to less than that number today in real terms.
At Aba, very few of the leaders of the party present could claim to be founding fathers of the party, not even Buhari, who joined the party in 2002, to become its flag bearer a year later. Of the three governors in Ahmad Sani of Zamfara, Ibrahim Shekarau of Kano and Modu-Sherriff of Bornu, only Sani and Sherriff could claim to have been in leadership position at the formation of the party. Furthermore, General Buhari by selecting Aba and the Enyimba stadium as the choice of his flag off may well be hoping that the indomitable will to succeed in industry as Aba has become noted for, or the prominence and greatness Enyimba achieved in that city in football some years ago, when they broke the jinx to win the African Club champions club, would under score his quest to be elected a civilian President, since the return of civil rule in 1999.
