Feb. 20--AUSTIN -- At 31, Heather Burcham should be dreaming of marriage, of children, of advancing a career. Instead, the Houston woman is just hoping to live another day, the result of an aggressive Stage 4 cervical cancer that's metastasized in her lungs, liver and pancreas.
Hers is a life that could've been spared with a mandatory HPV vaccine, Ms. Burcham said Monday, before the start of the first public hearing on the controversial topic since Gov. Rick Perry made the vaccine mandatory for Texas schoolgirls this month.
Her statements came as the House Public Health Committee prepared to consider a bill by Rep. Dennis Bonnen, R-Angleton, to counter Mr. Perry's order. The bill would ban schools from using HPV vaccinations as a condition for admission. The hearing started late, and several people scheduled to testify, including Ms. Burcham, left before the testimony began. Debate continued into the night.
