Burroughs Wellcome Co., Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, released the following on November 23, 1994:

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit yesterday upheld a July 1993 district court judgment and affirmed Burroughs Wellcome scientists as the sole inventors on five of the six patents for the use of Retrovir brand zidovudine (AZT) as a treatment for HIV disease. A three-judge panel upheld the ruling of the District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina as a matter of law in favor of Burroughs Wellcome Co. and against two generic drug manufacturers, Barr Laboratories, Inc., Novopharm, Inc. and Novopharm Ltd.
