CEBU CITYTHE roar of approval, the confetti and the balloons told it allan election campaign off to a rousing start. It was short and sweet, simple but festive.

And all eyes were on former Senators Vicente Sotto III and Tessie Oreta-Aquino when President Macapagal-Arroyo yesterday proclaimed the 12 senatorial candidates of her Team Unitys launching in Cebu City.

Not even the presence on stage of the days undisputed scene-stealer, movie actor-director Cesar Montano, whom Ms Arroyo had drafted into the ticket at the last minute, could dim the spotlight on the two former opposition figures.

After all, it hadnt been too long since Sotto and Oreta were standing side by side with the late movie king and opposition presidential candidate Fernando Poe Jr. in the 2004 election.

Now, in another political extravaganza before 8,000 people at the Cebu Coliseum, the pair …
