Feb. 16--Orange County middle- and high-school students can breathe a sigh of relief: They won't spend more time in class next school year.

The School Board decided Thursday night to pass on an idea to extend the school day beginning in the fall.

The following year, however, could be a different story. The school day could grow longer if the board can find more money.

Who that decision could affect is not clear. The board has been debating extending the day for all middle- and high-school students for years but could scale back those plans for schools or students who might need some extra time.
