Hamilton leads test
McLaren-Mercedes F1 rookie Lewis Hamilton drove at the Valencia circuit in Spain a week after wrecking one of the team's new MP4-22 chassis there and wound up with the fastest lap time over four days of testing.
Fernando Alonso, Hamilton's teammate, was fastest on each of the first two days. Ralf Schumacher went fastest in the new Toyota TF107 on one day, and Giancarlo Fisichella and Heikki Kovalainen ran strongly with Renault's new R27. Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa were also solidly on the pace for Ferrari. Honda and Red Bull Racing merely shook down their new cars, while BMW-Sauber, Super Aguri and Williams also tested.
Fewer provisionals
NASCAR reduced the number of provisional qualifying spots former champions receive each year. Past champions now may use a maximum of six provisionals, rather than an unlimited number.
Audi power; another Porsche
The V8 engine that powered Audi's all-conquering R8 prototype to five Le Mans wins will return to the track this season in the back of a Lola LMP1 contender. The Audi-engined Lola B07/10 will be entered under the Swiss Spirit flag. The deal was put together by longtime sports car driver Jean-Denis Deletraz and Fred Stadler, who formerly ran the successful ROC touring car and sports car team. Stadler ran factory Audi Super Tourers in France and Germany in the 1990s.
