Feb. 14--Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Peter Gorman unveiled an $8 million plan this morning to shift power from the central office, give schools more authority and make the state's largest district feel smaller.
In response to mounting criticism that CMS has grown unresponsive, the district will be divided into six regions, or "learning communities," that will oversee the schools in those areas. The concept has previously won support from school board members, a high-profile task force and parents who have complained the district is too bureaucratic.
"We want to put as many resources as possible as close to the classroom as possible," Gorman said in a written statement. "We want to make CMS administration more responsive and flexible."
