The prairie frontier provided an opportunity for settlers to create an entirely new society, far from any old world influences. However, regardless of this opportunity for a new utopian community, the settlers were themselves products of old world culture and values. Consequently, despite their attempts to start anew, these influences permeated all that they did. They were, as historian Warren Elofson states, "governed by Victorian tastes."
