Byline: Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala II

I have long admired the fine service that the Management Association of the Philippines has been contributing to management practice in our country. The consistent excellence that characterizes the programs and positions of MAP since its founding in 1950 has defined good management and business leadership in our Philippine setting. The many individuals of respect who have provided governance at the MAP board or been recipients of its awards are a testament to its legacy and I am indebted to so many of them as advisors and friends, both at a personal and professional level.

Many past awardees. actually, have been kind enough to extend their friendships, many which started with my father, to Fernando and I as we developed our careers: Wash Sycip, Cesar Virata, the late Jimmy Ongpin, Ting Paterno, Cesar Buenaventura, Ronnie Concepcion, Oscar Hilado, Del Lazaro, Chuching Tambunting.

They are among the many who have had a significant impact on my professional life, who have been generous with their time and advice and who have helped Ayala in one way or another. I am honored to be in their company and those others who have received this award.

As I look at your history, and those you have honored, two key messages emerge from MAP about the nature of outstanding management.

First, success is not measured by quick and one time gains but by enduring beliefs and created by a disciplined approach to creating value.

Second, success also entails combining profitability with a broader contribution to society.

In other words, I share with many our appreciation of MAP's emphasis on promoting the public good through the benefits of excellent professional management practice in private business, government service and management education.

My personal gratitude for MAP's great service to our shared community is further amplified today by the honor it has extended to our Ayala group over the years. In the course of promoting its ideals of excellence in management, MAP had seen fit to recognize as management men of the year, first, my father in 1987 and, twenty years later, this honor you are bestowing on me.

Thank you for finding our respective work for the same corporation at different times fit to …
