Feb. 13--I first heard of human papillomavirus several months ago, when the TV ads began airing. At the time, I guess I thought the problem wasn't that serious. See, we've all gotten so jaded by money-hungry drug companies touting their pharmaceutical miracles, we don't believe much of what we see anymore. So when state Rep. Kathy Stein, D-Lexington, began pushing for a mandatory vaccine for middle school girls that would prevent their getting certain kinds of HPV, which in turn would prevent their getting cervical cancer, I knew it was time to educate myself.
