Feb. 13--As a mother of six, Alice Miller said she makes the decisions about what is best for her children. Republican Gov. Rick Perry does not. Miller said she has been livid since hearing Perry's order that Texas girls will be vaccinated against a sexually transmitted disease that causes cervical cancer. "He has completely disregarded any thought for parents' decisions," said Miller, 48, of Benbrook. "If this were to happen in California, it wouldn't surprise me. "But this is not something you expect for the state of Texas." Perry recently sparked a debate when he ordered state health officials to enforce a new rule requiring girls entering the sixth grade to be vaccinated for the human papillomavirus, or HPV. Parents who object may opt out of the requirement, which is scheduled to go into effect for the 2008-09 school year. Some say he overstepped his authority; others say he is helping to save lives.
