WHEN IT COMES TO SPAS, small, in my opinion, isn't better--small is best. I'll go for the intimate place with a pared-down yet interesting menu of classes and treatments any day. And so I felt right at home at the new Mayflower Spa, in Washington, Connecticut, where I spent a couple of days last spring. This destination spa, which accommodates a maximum of twenty-four guests, sits at the top of a hill, a short stroll from the renowned five-starred Mayflower Inn, one of the most romantic little luxury hostelries in New England. The Mnuchin family--the innkeepers and visionaries--began welcoming small groups to what the spa called its soft opening in May 2006.
