Feb. 11--The beautiful people win every day, right? They get loads of attention. They get lots of free stuff. And recent studies show they make about 5 percent more than average-looking people with similar education and experience and 14 percent more than those deemed below-average-looking.

So as much as fans may enjoy watching the beautiful people walk the red carpet and pose for the paparazzi, does anyone really want them to win more awards? No. Real folks like to cheer on the ones they can relate to most, the ones who have gone through some mess and successfully come out the other side. And no other major awards show taps into that more than the Grammys. Grammy voters love to reward musicians who triumph over adversity -- not those who are in the midst of adversity, mind you, just those who have beaten it. Tina Turner took home three Grammys in 1984 to cap her comeback from spousal abuse. Bonnie Raitt received four Grammys in 1989 after combating what she calls "the blues disease," addictions to drugs and alcohol. And Eric Clapton collected six Grammys in 1992, including three…
