NEW DELHI--India's emergence as an economic power stems from the country's shift under Prime Minister Narasimha Rao in the early 1990s from an economy centered around socialist principles to one based on market forces. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, then finance minister, played a key role in the reform process.

Ashok Desai, a former adviser to Singh, discussed the liberalization of the Indian economy in an interview with The Yomiuri Shimbun as one of a number of interviews conducted in conjunction with the six part "Emerging India" series that finished Tuesday.
