The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced October 17 that it had approved sitagliptin phosphate (Januvia), for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. This is the first in a new class of diabetes drugs called DPP-4 inhibitors.

"It works by a completely different mechanism than currently available diabetes drugs," explains Elise Brett, MD, assistant clinical professor in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Bone Disease at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
